Welcome to the SWAP - Elfin Forest "Oakleaves Morgue"

To go directly to Individual Editions by date click here -or- to go to the Subject Index click here.

We might be two or three editions behind in our "indexing". (We are looking for a volunteer to keep the indexes better up todate - volunteer?)

For discriptions of and instructions for using the indexes read on:

Copies of Oakleaves are stored in two different forms:

  1. Recent editions are in PDF format that can be easily viewed, navigated, and, text and pictures copied and pasted into your own documents.

  2. The remainder of the Oakleaves editions (the majority) were obtained by scanning old paper copies into JPG files. JPGs are photographic images. The files tend to be big. To keep the time required to download over the Internet with-in reason each file contains only a single page.

To get to the next page you will need to use your browser's "Navigation Window" to select a new page. For instructions on doing this see Note #2*, below

Because the page is a photograph you cannot cut out text and paste it into a word processing document. Also the resolution of text and pictures will vary as you zoom in and out with your browser.

There are two ways to access the Oakleaves database:

  • Subject Index

You will be taken to a conventional looking subject index. When you click on an article the page with your article will pop-up. If available, you will get the PDF version; if not you'll get a single page JPG.

  • Individual Editions

Will take you to a table where each individual edition, by date, is on its own line. The format of each listing is either: "2003-08-01" or "2010-02 PDF". The first example means: page 01 of the Aug-Sept 2003 Oakleaves in JPG format. The second sample is the entire Feb-Mar 2010 edition in PDF format.

* NOTES:

  1. If your browser refuses to view PDF files all is not lost. PDF's (Portable Document Format devised by Adobe Co.) have become the virtual standard for electronic document exchange world wide. Virtually every computer sold these days comes with a Internet browser installed that supports PDFs. If your browser doesn't it is probably because you either have a very old browser or support for PDFs some how got turned off. There is one generic thing you can try that will cover 80%+ of the problems -- go to your browser and see if an "update" is available. Installing an update should take care of your problem.

To find updates check "Tools" and "Help" on the "Tool Bar" of your web browser. If you find something that says "Updates", "Upgrade" or "Latest Version" click it and follow the instructions, or in "Help" enter "PDF" and search for the answer. If that fails send an e-mail to webmaster@elfin-forest.org and we'll try to come up with something.

  2. To navigate page to page within a PDF is easy -- just use the forward and back buttons. In JPG files it is only a little more difficult. At the very top of your browser you will find a window that shows the current Internet address of the page you are viewing. For instance it might be: http://elfin-forest.org/Library/Oakleaves/Archives/2003-08-01.jpg. The two digit number "01" just before ".jpg" is the page number of the document you are viewing. With your cursor select just the page number and edit it to the page you want to see next and hit your "Enter" button or what ever it is called on your keyboard. Hint: do not accidentally erase the ".jpg" after the page number.

  3. If your connection to the Internet is too slow or if you are having problems navigating through all the JPG files there is a non-Internet solution: cross your web master's palm with 50 cents in coin of the realm for materials and he will provide the whole Oakleaves database on your choice of one DVD or two CDs. This beats download speeds over a slow Internet connection by an order of magnitude or two. As a bonus, if you have the right JPG viewer on your computer, you can navigation page to page with the forward and back buttons (still will not be able to cut and paste text or pictures unless you have a good OCR program and know how to use it.)

  4. The PDF versions of Oakleaves we've located so far start with the December 2004 edition, but there is a big two year hole in the middle of the collection. We will of course be trying to find the missing files. They may appear in this database soon. There is a good chance we may also find some earlier versions.

  5. Don't let all the verbiage above scare you off. Try it. It is a much, much easier to use these indexes than to read about them.
